Dragons give the medieval eras something history never had: air power. A dragon over an unprepared army rewrites the fight — and a dragon over a prepared one meets the ballista line that’s been waiting for exactly this.
That’s the design: dragons are spectacular but answerable. They demand a response from your opponent, and they punish you for assuming the response isn’t there. Later ages only raise the stakes, as jets and missiles enter a sky dragons once ruled alone.
